From the President – April 2025

I’d like to begin by extending a big thank you to everyone who attended our Field Supervisor Leadership Training on March 20th. It was wonderful to see such strong turnout, highlighting the value our community places on leadership development. Special thanks to our fantastic panelists: Laura Carlos from Terra Landscape, Chris DeLeon from Landscape Care Company, and Jorge Ponce from Allied Landscape. Your insights and experiences made the event exceptionally valuable.

Looking ahead, our Chapter will be hosting a CLCA Awards drop-off and networking social on Friday, April 26th at 6:00 pm at Plank Beer Garden in Oakland. It’s a perfect opportunity to connect, share, and celebrate our industry’s achievements. I’m looking forward to seeing many of you there!

On a personal note, I find myself reflecting a lot on the uncertainty around us—tariffs, fluctuations in the financial markets, heightened immigration enforcement activity, potential constriction in the labor market—all of which can significantly impact our industry. There are days I feel confident and optimistic, and others where concern and uncertainty creep in.

Yet, I continually remind myself to take a deep breath and focus on what I can control. For me, that means keeping my attention on our team, our clients, our company goals, and our mission. I feel incredibly fortunate to have such a dedicated and capable team in place, especially as we gear up for the busy season—this week, we’re already turning on irrigation systems!

And let’s not overlook this incredible weather—it’s been a wonderful reminder of why many of us love what we do.

In closing, I encourage each of you to stay focused, remain optimistic, and continue to lean on each other as we navigate the busy spring ahead. Wishing everyone a prosperous and productive season, and I hope to catch up with you at Plank Beer Garden on Friday, April 26th!

Tribute to an Industry Guru

by Brian Horn
Jim Huston

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of James R. Huston, MBA, CPE, the president, and founder of J.R. Huston Enterprises. Jim passed away peacefully in his sleep last week at his home in Grand Lake, CO. He was 75 years old.

For over thirty-five years, Jim was a transformative figure in the Green Industry, dedicating his life to helping others succeed. As a Certified Professional Landscape Estimator—one of only two such professionals in the world—he set a standard of excellence that inspired countless landscape, tree service, and irrigation contractors. His induction into the Green Industry Hall of Fame is a testament to his outstanding contributions and unwavering commitment to his profession.
