From the President – February 2025

I want to start by thanking everyone who attended our East Bay Chapter New Year Kick-Off event at Fieldwork Brewing Co. in San Ramon. With 40 industry professionals in attendance, it was fantastic to see both familiar and new faces coming together to connect, share insights, and set the stage for a strong year ahead.

As I look toward the coming months, I see tremendous opportunities for our industry—along with some challenges that will require adaptability and strategic planning. At Terra Landscape, we’ve been working to align our individual and department goals with our broader company objectives. To make progress, we break these goals into measurable activities and set 90-day targets. This structured approach keeps us focused and accountable, ensuring that we take meaningful steps toward success.

One of the ways we support our goals is by investing in professional development. Earlier this month, our team attended the CLCA Nor Cal Landscape & Nursery Show, where they participated in valuable educational seminars. I encourage you to take advantage of upcoming CLCA learning opportunities as well. On February 20th, the East Bay Chapter will host an Irrigation Electrical Troubleshooting lunch and learn led by Eric Santos. And on March 20th, we will hold a Supervisor Success Panel, where industry leaders will share key insights for developing strong field supervisors.

As we prepare for the busy season, I urge you to cultivate a growth mindset within your team. A fixed mindset views abilities as static, leading to avoidance of challenges and fear of failure. A growth mindset, on the other hand, embraces learning, sees setbacks as opportunities, and fosters long-term improvement. Within our company, we emphasize that success isn’t about proving yourself—it’s about improving yourself.

The CLCA East Bay Chapter is an invaluable resource for helping you, your team, and our industry grow. I encourage you to stay involved, connect with peers, and take full advantage of the opportunities ahead.

Looking forward to seeing you at our upcoming events!

A Visit to CLCA State Headquarters

Leadership

East Bay Board of Director Members Maria Jehs (President Elect), Kristin Gallego (Treasurer), Cassidy Lundin (President), Damion Rosby (Director of Membership) and Laura Leuer ended the day and a half of Leadership fun at CLCA’s new office location in Sacramento.

A Message from Tom Sweeney

A Message from Tom Sweeney, East Bay Chapter Member and Immediate Past President of CLCA

Tom Sweeney

I served out my term as State Board President at the Leadership Conference in Sacramento.

Many EB members were present. I facilitated the Green Sky Visioning breakouts, which were well attended. We covered a myriad of topics. A few stuck in my mind. Both breakouts began with Climate change and what part CLCA leadership could and should be involved.

As industry experts, we should be included with state and local authorities defining and developing strategies for fire prevention, including plant pallets, working, and meeting with insurance adjustors to determine the best path forward as areas in our state begin to rebuild.

  • Include CEU’s as part of our education webinars.
  • More opportunities for stand alone CWM certification in Nor Cal. I get asked about this a lot.
  • Form a women’s group.
  • Reach out to college students entering the field.
  • How AI will affect the future of our industry.

I plan to present the discussions and ideas at our first board meeting in February.

I will serve one more year on the State board as Immediate Past President.

I look forward to seeing my colleagues at future events.
