Investing in Training to Raise the Bar in Landscape Operations
As the landscape industry continues to evolve, the importance of ongoing training and investment in operations has never been more critical. The California Landscape Contractors Association (CLCA) East Bay Chapter is dedicated to raising industry standards with world-class training programs that ensure the Bay Area remains at the forefront of landscape innovation.
Our industry faces unprecedented challenges—rising fuel costs, the shift to electric equipment, mandates to remove non-functional turf, and increasing green infrastructure demands. These changes are coupled with fewer horticultural programs, declining numbers of new entrants to the field, and the emergence of technologies like robotics. The future of landscape management will require professionals to adapt and lead in areas such as regenerative practices, sustainable water use, and climate-conscious design.
To address these headwinds, CLCA East Bay will be hosting a series of specialized training sessions in early 2025 to support industry members in meeting the demands of today and tomorrow. Our upcoming offerings will tentatively include but open to requests:
- Irrigation Technician Training led by industry expert Eric Santos, focusing on the latest techniques in efficient water management.
- Maintenance Crew Training featuring a panel of local business owners and managers sharing best practices for maintenance excellence.
- Landscape Construction Training also presented by local business leaders, providing hands-on insights into high-quality landscape construction.
- Landscape Crew Leader Leadership and Management training to equip leaders with skills in management, communication, and team development.
We are committed to providing a collaborative learning environment.
To maintain trust within our community, we have a strict no-recruiting policy at these events. Members can confidently invest in their teams’ development alongside local peers. We also invite you to consider participating as a panel instructor or joining our board, ensuring that the voices of our members continue to guide the chapter’s direction. CLCA East Bay is more than just a professional association—it’s a network of dedicated landscapers who work together to elevate the industry.
Join us at one of our training or networking events and become a part of our mission to shape the future of landscaping. Let’s keep the Bay Area on the cutting edge.
CLCA East Bay Chapter Electrical Equipment Training and Lunch
Thank you to those that joined us at the Electrical Equipment Training and Luncheon on October 17th at Las Positas College. Kristin Gallego, Cassidy Lundin and Loren McIrvin discussed tips and tricks for using battery powered landscape equipment. Topics included training your crews on using battery powered equipment, communicating with your clients on time and costs and smart charging strategies.

Choosing the Right Irrigation System for a Home
1. Evaluate the Landscape’s Needs
Each landscape is unique, and the first step in selecting an irrigation system is understanding the specific requirements of the property.
Consider these factors:
- Plant Types: Lawns, flower beds, shrubs and trees all have different water needs. Grouping plants by water needs can ensure optimal irrigation.
- Soil Type: Sandy soils drain quickly, while clay soils retain water. The type of soil impacts how often and how long the system should run.
- Sun Exposure: Areas that get full sun will require more water than shaded zones.
- Slopes: Landscapes with elevation changes may need special considerations to prevent runoff and ensure even water distribution.
