From the President – July 2025

Summer is in full swing, and like many of you, our teams are running at full speed managing client requests, responding to irrigation needs, and navigating the busiest time of our season. The next ten days are expected to bring relatively mild weather, which is a welcome break for both the landscapes we care for and the people who care for them.

This time of year is a great reminder to recognize and celebrate the hardworking individuals who make our success possible. At our company, one of the ways we do this is by hosting a Summer BBQ—an event where our entire team can take a step back, recharge, and enjoy good food, music, fun games, and a bit of hands-on education. It’s a small but meaningful way to show appreciation and keep morale strong during the peak of the season.

Looking ahead, many of us are still trying to understand the full scope of the “One Big Beautiful Bill”—a nearly 1,000-page piece of federal legislation that includes significant changes affecting immigration policy. While I still have a lot of reading and research to do, one thing seems clear: the climate of enhanced immigration enforcement is likely to continue. With increased funding for ICE, expanded detention capacity, and stepped-up removal efforts, these developments could have real implications for our industry and labor force.

As we all work to adapt, we’ll continue to look to CLCA for resources and guidance to help navigate the road ahead.

Enjoy the rest of your summer, and I look forward to seeing you at an upcoming CLCA East Bay Chapter event!

CLCA Member Helping Shape Landscapes and Landscape Professionals of the Future

By Loren McIrvin

I’d like to recognize one of our own—Eric Santos of Epic Irrigation—for his outstanding contributions to both the landscapes of today and the professionals of tomorrow. Over the past few years, I’ve had the opportunity to attend multiple trainings led by Eric, ranging from advanced irrigation troubleshooting to smart approaches to AB1572 compliance. Each time, I’ve walked away impressed—not only by the content, but by his ability to communicate it with clarity and passion.

Not to date myself, but I’ve been seeking out landscape education since the late ‘90s and have accumulated more certifications and licenses than I’d care to admit. So when I say Eric’s trainings are excellent, it comes from a place of what some of us “seasoned” landscapers might humbly call wisdom.

Eric is more than just a great educator—he’s a tireless volunteer and leader in our industry. He serves on the CLCA, sits on the Board of Directors for ReScape, contributes to the Irrigation Association’s Education Committee, and plays a key role in the Horticulture Department at Las Positas College as both an educator and committee member.

His work represents the best of what our profession can be: technically excellent, environmentally responsible, and committed to mentorship. I’m grateful for his contributions, and I know I’m not alone in feeling inspired by the standard he sets. Through his efforts, Eric is helping to ensure that the Bay Area remains a leader in progressive, sustainable landscape management.
