From the President – November 2025
It’s hard to believe that Thanksgiving is just around the corner. One thing I know many of us are grateful for is the early-season rain we’ve received. The end of irrigation season marks a real turning point for water management in our Mediterranean climate, where most landscapes depend on supplemental water through the dry months. I’m hopeful that this strong start to the rainy season is a sign of at least an average year for rain and snowpack, and that we’ll see our reservoirs and groundwater supplies continue to rebound.
This time of year is also when many of us take stock of the year that’s wrapping up and start setting goals and targets for the year ahead. At Terra Landscape, we’re working to engage team members in that process so they have a real voice in identifying priorities and take ownership in driving results.
One area every company can always revisit is safety. Last month our East Bay Chapter hosted a safety panel discussion, and I was encouraged by the strong turnout, high level of participant engagement, and the thoughtful questions and follow-up conversations I’ve had since. It’s clear that our members are actively working to strengthen their safety programs and cultures—not just checking a box.
Lastly, as we near the end of the year, it’s important to recognize and celebrate the people who make everything we do possible. Our East Bay Chapter will be hosting a Holiday Celebration on Sunday, December 7th at Da Boccery in Livermore. I hope to see you there, raising a glass, connecting with industry professionals, and engaging in a little bit of playful debauchery together.

Doubling Down on People and Relationships in AI
by Loren McIrvin
Artificial intelligence is transforming nearly every industry, and landscaping is no exception. From estimating software that predicts job costs in seconds to autonomous mowers and irrigation analytics platforms, technology is redefining how we plan, manage, and measure success. But as exciting as this new frontier is, it is worth remembering that the foundation of every great landscape company has always been great people, great partnerships, and great performance.
At Allied Landscape, we often say that AI can enhance our tools, but people remain our edge. The landscape trade is, at its core, a relationship business rooted in trust, responsiveness, and shared pride in the spaces we care for. Clients may sign contracts with companies, but they stay because of the people who show up, communicate clearly, and deliver consistently.
As leaders, we are being challenged to strike a balance: embrace innovation without losing connection. AI can help identify trends, streamline estimating, and guide smarter decisions, but it cannot replace the intuitive judgment of a seasoned account manager, the craft of a skilled crew supervisor, or the empathy required to understand a client’s unspoken expectations. The companies that will thrive are those that blend the two — technology that empowers, not replaces, people.
Investing in your team is the most future proof strategy you can adopt. That means building training programs, mentorship tracks, and clear career pathways that develop talent from within. It means cultivating curiosity and collaboration so employees view technology not as a threat, but as a partner in doing higher value work. And it means celebrating culture — creating workplaces where people feel seen, supported, and proud to represent their craft.
Equally important is how we nurture our partnerships with clients, vendors, and even peers across the CLCA. As our industry evolves, the most resilient companies will be those that maintain authentic human networks. Sharing knowledge, referring business, and elevating the professional standard of our trade benefits everyone.
As we enter this AI era, it is worth remembering that the smartest technology still depends on the wisdom of people. Landscapes are living systems, and so are companies. They grow best when they are cared for by great people, rooted in great partnerships, and guided by great performance.
