Maximizing the Off-Season: A Time for Reflection, Growth, and Planning for 2025

As the colder months approach and the pace of work begins to slow, the off-season is the perfect time for landscape contractors to take a step back and reflect on the 2024 season. Winter isn’t just a time to rest—it’s an opportunity to sharpen your focus, evaluate your successes and challenges, and plan for a more productive and successful 2025. This period of reflection is essential for anyone looking to grow their business and create a lasting impact on both their team and the industry. Here are a few ways to leverage the off-season to set yourself up for success next year.

Reflecting on the 2024 Season: Lessons Learned

The first step toward improvement is understanding what went right and what went wrong in 2024. Ask yourself these questions:

What went right?
Look at your wins: Were projects delivered on time? Did you meet your financial goals? Did your team exceed client expectations? Identify the key factors that contributed to these successes—whether it was a well-executed process, improved team coordination, or better communication with clients.

What went wrong?
No season is perfect. Whether you experienced scheduling issues, communication breakdowns, or unexpected equipment failures, pinpoint the areas that didn’t meet your expectations. Use these challenges as opportunities for growth. This is where your future training and process improvements should focus.

What Does Winning Look Like to You?

Every landscape contractor has their own definition of success. Now is the time to reflect on what winning means for your business. Once you have a clear idea of what winning looks like, you can customize your strategies for the upcoming year to align with that vision.

Customizing Training Around Your Goals With the off-season comes the chance to strengthen your team’s skills and knowledge. Now is the perfect time to develop training programs that are tailored to your definition of success. Consider areas where your team struggled in 2024 and focus on improving those skills.

This could include:

  • Technical Skills: Were there gaps in knowledge regarding specific landscaping techniques, equipment usage, or project management? Investing in technical training will boost your team’s competence and confidence.
  • Soft Skills: While technical expertise is critical, soft skills such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving are just as important. Training in these areas can improve internal collaboration and client relationships.
  • Safety Training: A safe work environment is key to running a successful operation. Use this time to review and refresh safety protocols, ensuring that everyone is up to date on best practices.

Customizing your training programs around your definition of winning will ensure that your team is better prepared to meet your goals in 2025.

Another key off-season tasks is showing appreciation for your team as you reflect on the past year, don’t forget to take a moment to recognize your team’s hard work. Landscaping is demanding, and the effort your employees put in deserves acknowledgment. Showing appreciation doesn’t have to wait until the next season.

This could include:

  • Celebrate Successes: Acknowledge the specific contributions of team members who went above and beyond. Whether it’s a personal note of thanks or a team gathering, recognition builds morale and loyalty.
  • Offer Professional Growth Opportunities: Demonstrating that you’re invested in your employees’ development shows them that they’re valued. Offer opportunities for continuing education, certifications, or new responsibilities that align with their strengths.
  • Foster Open Communication: Create a culture where team members feel comfortable sharing their thoughts on how to improve processes or team dynamics. They often have insights that can help streamline operations or address common pain points.

Ultimately, the off-season is your chance to define what winning looks like for you in 2025. Whether it’s achieving financial goals, growing your team’s skills, enhancing client relationships, or becoming a leader in sustainability, use the winter to develop a clear, actionable plan.

The Final East Bay Chapter Battle of the Bay

On August 18th we came together for the East Bay Chapter’s final Oakland A’s vs. Giants Tailgate and Baseball Game. For more than 15 years the Oakland A’s vs. Giants Baseball Game has been a favorite event for CLCA members, crews and their families to tailgate, network and enjoy watching the bay areas rivals battle in Oakland. We are so grateful for the many years the Chapter organized the event, our generous Partners and Ewing for co-hosting the tailgate party year of year.
